Because who said rehab can't be fun?

HealMotion emerged from the vision to transform rehabilitation for individuals with fine motor impairments into an engaging, global community experience.

Focused on gamifying hand exercises, our goal was to enhance independence, foster social connections, and challenge the stigma associated with impairments.

GOAL

How might we enable users with
fine motorimpairments to strengthen
their hand dexterity in a engaging and
mentally safe space?

Engage users, build connections, and shatter the stigma around fine motor impairments.

Implement a game that enforces users to strengthen their hand and finger dexterity.

Create an supportive environment where players can improve their self-confidence and sense of independence together through play and collaboration.

A collaborative multiplayer cup stacking game fosters teamwork, shared accomplishment, and social interaction among individuals with fine motor disabilities, promoting skill development and a sense of independence within a supportive environment.

Our goal is to create a mixed reality recovery community using XR technology, encouraging collaborative play to strengthen hand dexterity, and promoting social connection and self-confidence among users.

KEy Research

Delving into the minds of warriors

We aspired to create an inclusive app, welcoming individuals from diverse backgrounds, ages, and motivations to engage in hand exercises. As a result, we developed two distinctive personas to capture the richness of our user base.

User Personas

John (53-year-old Stroke Survivor)

  • Struggles with impaired hand mobility post-stroke.

  • Feels defeated, isolated, and disconnected from activities he once enjoyed.

  • Longs for a way to connect with others who share similar challenges.

Jane (Young Professional with Hand Cramps)

  • Faces hand cramps due to a digital-centric lifestyle.

  • Seeks a balance between her digital world and physical well-being.

  • Values connecting with others while addressing her hand-related issues.

Research

We researched some of the best exercises for a diverse audience. Informed by thorough research, including an exploration of effective exercises for conditions like stroke and other hand-related concerns, we narrowed our exercises.

  • Card Stacking (Flipping and Pinching)

  • Individual Finger Stretches

  • Wrist Twist

  • Hand Squeezing

DESIGN

01

Create engaging games for dexterity

02

Boost confidence through collaborative play.

03

Empower independence.

User flow

Creating User Flows

We started off with a user story that led us to our user flow where we wanted to include onboarding, gameplay, exercises and community interaction. Our main game would be the hand stacking which is collaborative.

Features

After designing screens in Figma, I transformed them into immersive interfaces with Bezi, adding dynamic depth to buttons through animated interactions. Subsequently, I seamlessly integrated Bezi-designed screens into Unity, providing our developers with a versatile foundation for both single-player and multiplayer gaming experiences.

Screen Clickthrough

The user has the option to either play solo or multi-player and from there, they can select 2 games or guided hand exercises.

Cup Stacking

There is a wireframe that two people work together to stack the cups and you are able to talk to each other as well.

🎶 Key Tips

In this game, you are stretching your fingers while playing music! You can change the instrument by grabbing from the bubble and each finger is a different key note!

Guided Exercises

The user has the option to either play solo or multi-player and from there, they can select 2 games or guided hand exercises.

IMPACT

Final Thoughts + Next Steps

Our team was proud of our contribution to networking with physical and digital world settings, real time hand tracking and user status syncing, public health and social impact, collaboration and connection between people.

We learned that connection is important, not only for users in our app's community, but also for teammates - that's us.

For our next version of HealMotion, we plan to enhance multiplayer stability, enrich exercises with more gameplay.
