INTRO

Reopen the world.
Share your voice to help detect COVID.

The pandemic is affecting everyone's lives and no one can meet each other without the risk and fear of getting COVID-19.

At Sonaphi, we are making COVID testing easier and more accessible by launching an app that can tell you if you have COVID-19 with a 30 second voice recording using AI.

VRI is a mobile app and part of a clinical study that Sonaphi is undertaking to establish the efficacy and accuracy of its COVID-19 voice-based screening app. The study will help train our technology to detect COVID, end this pandemic and reopen the world.

Led user research, flows, and prototyping over a 2-month project (Dec 2020–Feb 2021) alongside a PM and 2 engineers using Figma, Miro, and Trello.

GOAL

How might we improve user experience
and include features to help the ML model
while on budget?

With around 4,000 voice samples donated and new improvements in the medical field, Sonaphi needed a way to improve the current features of the app and add new fields for data from the users.

The clinical team and engineering team needed new data from users to help them in their research and train the technology since there was new forms of vaccines coming out.kjjjkjkj

Doctors and Audio Scientists on our team at Sonaphi would analyze the results of the voice samples. The engineering team would collaborate with the clinical team to come up with solutions to make detecting COVID more accurate.

KEY RESEARCH INSIGHTS

One-to-One Interviews

We called around 30 of our users to gather feedback for our apps and also 9 user interviews with Zoom connected on their laptops and phone screen.

  • How many times did you donate your voice?

  • How did you discover VRI?

  • Any issues/troubles?

  • Comments or feedback

Behind on Research

New research on COVID-19 was being discovered every day, yet VRI did not include the most updated research.

Wrong Assumptions about Users

Previous users would record their voices but did not know how to update their symptoms list.

Low User Retention

The app allowed users to upload their COVID test results only once during onboarding.

Lack of feedback

A lot of users expressed that they did not know if their COVID test result or voice recording was being accepted.

DESIGN GOALS

01

Increase retention and engagement

02

Increase usability through more feedback

03

Redesign for accessibility

User flow

Adding Features within the Current Flow

After we narrowed our features list by importance and made sure it fit within our budget, I put together the current flow and finding out ways where we can place the new features. After a few iterations with the team, we came up with the version on the right. This would help feed our AI model.

Voice Recording Experience

There were tips if the users wanted to click, on it. Also, an option for users to submit that record, or delete and record again if they chose to. After uploading the voice sample to our system, they can return to the dashboard with a “Thank you” screen, otherwise the app would ask them to record again or return.

Questionnaire prior to Voice Recording

Since December of 2020, the COVID vaccine has come out and new discovery of COVID is emerging everyday, there was a need to find out if users had symptoms or have taken the vaccine. We decided to place it right before recording so that it can be an easy addition to the engineering team to map that data to that voice sample. This was so our research and accuracy of detection can increase.

Enter COVID Test Result

After you click on the user participant to record the voice sample, we decided to add the number files along with the total recordings so that the user can keep count and have confirmation of the exam being uploaded with the date. We also included a tips slider dialog to give users directions. Also entering the data makes in the input fields make it easier for the clinical & engineering teams to organize the data rather than looking at images to find information. Around 77% testers successfully uploaded the image of their test result.

REDESIGN

Getting Close.

After the TestFlight release, our team got an increase in our budget and we decided to make a redesign of VRI.

Increase Font Size + More Contrast
We made the headings of the input labels darkers from the original gray and the input fields to have a higher contrast to the white background. Also, text size increased to reduce the white space like below.

IMPACT

Final Thoughts & Next Steps.

Our team was proud of the progress we made and our stakeholders, also impressed by our changes. We even got budget to continue for redesign! The next steps would be for a HIPPA compliant officer to review and approve our design changes before we can submit for approval to the App Store. Overall, the user feedback & the increase of budget from our stakeholders gives me confidence that the new version of VRI has the potential to  increase our company’s user retention & increase our COVID-19 accuracy detection.

Results were boosted flow-through click rate on our iOS app by 200%, and improved positive ratings on the VRI app by 60% through strategic UX enhancements.

As a startup, we have a very fast-paced work culture and within her first few days, Ayesha single-handedly led an internal hackathon of sorts and developed the first complete set of high-fidelity wireframes for our product prototype. Since then, I have continued to be impressed with her fresh ideas that always consider the customer-first, as well as her endless thirst for more knowledge.
